Ayana Bio & Wooree Green Science Partners to Produce Saffron Free of Agriculture


Boston-based Ayana BioThe spin-off from Ginkgo Bioworks, along with Wooree Green Science a South Korean biotech company developing functional ingredients, have announced a new partnership to create sustainable ingredients for South Korean wellness and health products. 

A joint development agreement will allow the companies to produce saffron that is free of agriculture, using plant cell technology. This will make weight loss supplements made from plants more affordable. By using this innovative method, companies can address the supply chain challenges as well as expensive labor fees.

Ayana Bio explains that saffron has been proven to help with weight loss through a reduction in hunger and an increase in metabolism. Climate change is having a negative impact on saffron production, which increases the difficulty of the supply chain. The labor intensive plant harvesting process requires 170,000 flowers in order to produce one kilo.
