The Spanish Congress passed the law on Tuesday, 9th February 2023. On Wednesday, 29th March, it was published in the Official State Gazette.
‘Working dogs’ used for hunting and guarding livestock are not protected under the new measures created to improve the ‘safety and welfare of all animals’. The measures include: a mandatory dog training course, a cockfighting ban, and stricter restrictions for breeding and the sale of animals.
For non-compliance, fines between 50,001 and 200,000 euros are now in place.
The Key Takeaways
The Breeding and Sale of Pets
Pet shops won’t be able to sell or show dogs and cats anymore in order to encourage adoption. Breeders will only be allowed to sell or breed animals if they have a local authority license. The number of litters is also limited. The Vegan Review was unable to locate any additional information regarding the process of obtaining permits.
Cockfighting
Canary Islands & Andalucia now prohibit cockfighting.
